Okidoky vs YNAB — methodology or tool?
YNAB (You Need A Budget) is the world's best-known budget app, with its own methodology: zero-based budgeting. Okidoky is a ledger without a methodology. This page explains the difference — and helps you pick what fits how you think about money.
A fixed method versus a free overview
YNAB is more than an app — it's a fixed way of working. You give every dollar a job before you spend it. For some people that works brilliantly. For others it feels like a straitjacket.
Okidoky doesn't choose for you. It shows where your money goes and gives you a look ahead, but doesn't force a fixed method. Which fits you? 15 points side by side, the cost over 5 years and when each one fits, below.
YNAB
YNAB: every dollar a job
Every dollar gets a job. You divide your money into pots before you spend it. Strict and thorough — strong for people who really want to change their habits.
For: people who want structure and want to change their habits
Okidoky
Just a ledger
Record what comes in and goes out. See patterns, get a look ahead, plan categories — but no system forcing every euro. For people who already have control and just want overview.
For: people with calm finances who want overview, not a big turnaround
What can each do?
YNAB has more that fits its own method. Okidoky has more that's handy in the Netherlands (language, European banks, privacy law).

Choose YNAB if...
These are hard arguments
You believe in zero-based budgeting
This approach has helped many people get out of debt and handle money more consciously. If you want to follow it seriously, YNAB is built entirely around it.
You want to give every dollar a job
With YNAB you divide your money into pots (categories) up front. You can't overspend by accident, because a pot is either full or empty. Strong for people who struggle to hold themselves back.
You work in USD or internationally
YNAB is mainly made for the United States — dollars, paying off credit card debt, American banks. Useful if you live or work there.
You value the community
YNAB has an active community with coaches, podcasts, workshops and forums. That contribution to behavior change is hard to match.
You have structural debt to tackle
YNAB's approach is strong if you want to pay off debt. It has special step-by-step plans for that (like paying off your smallest debt first).
Note: YNAB costs $109 a year, is mostly in English, and has no one-off option. For Dutch users without American accounts, that's a lot of money.
Choose Okidoky if...
These are your benefits
You don't want a strict system
If YNAB's strict way doesn't fit you (and for many it doesn't), it gets frustrating. Okidoky just shows where your money goes, without forcing a fixed method on you.
You're Dutch and stay that way
App in Dutch, help in Dutch, and you import your bank file (ING and Knab go automatically, other Dutch banks you set up once). Your data is in Europe, under the privacy law. YNAB is in English and made for the US.
You also have a freelancer side
In Okidoky you can keep business and personal in one ledger with labels, and store your receipts for your records. YNAB is purely personal.
You want to scan receipts on your own device
On free accounts your receipt is read on your own phone — it doesn't leave your device. Premium has a more accurate scan that works over the internet. With YNAB, receipts always go via their server.
A hundred euros a year is a lot
YNAB costs $109 a year (± €100). Okidoky Lifetime is €25 one-off. Over 5 years you pay $545 for YNAB, €25 for Okidoky. Not every difference in features makes that worth it.
Plus: Okidoky also has monthly budgets and savings goals. If you like YNAB's approach but don't want the whole strict version, you can build a lighter one in Okidoky.
Questions about this comparison
Does YNAB even work well in the Netherlands?
Yes, it works — you can use any currency and import your bank file. But: the app and the help are in English, and many things aimed at the US (like cleverly shuffling credit card debt) are of little use here. YNAB can link to your bank automatically in some countries, but not for all Dutch banks.
Can I use Okidoky with YNAB methodology?
Partly. Okidoky has monthly budgets per category, which resembles YNAB's pots. But Okidoky doesn't require you to divide up every euro in advance — so you can work 'loosely' YNAB-like, without the full strictness. For real YNAB fans that's too little.
What if I'm using YNAB and want to switch?
YNAB lets you download your data. You export your transactions, categories and budgets and import them into Okidoky. Do expect the pots structure to disappear — Okidoky works with simple categories and optional budgets. Many people find they don't miss YNAB's strictness.
Does Okidoky have a YNAB-like community?
No. YNAB's community (forum, podcasts, coaches) is worth a lot to many users. Our knowledge base has 30+ answers; we have no forum or coaches. For some people that's a dealbreaker — for others it's welcome peace.
Could I use both?
You can, but it's usually impractical. The essence of YNAB is that you follow one system. Doing both at once works well for neither. Have to choose? Pick one and go all-in.
