How Okidoky works

Who builds this, where does the money come from, and why a subscription instead of ads? Here's the answer.

The company

RULIDO — the people behind Okidoky

Okidoky is made and maintained by RULIDO, a Dutch sole proprietorship in the Netherlands. One maker, no investors, one product at a time.

The origin

Why Okidoky exists

You don't build a household bookkeeping app without a reason. The reason behind Okidoky is personal — that's why this is a ledger, not a financial advisor.

"I'm building the app I wish I'd had when things stopped working. No course, no coach — just a simple overview that would have given me grip before the problem became one."

The founder

RULIDO · knows what it's like to lose grip

1

I've been through financial hardship myself

Weekly allowance, court-appointed administration, protective guardianship, and eventually debt restructuring. I know first-hand how quickly a life unravels once you lose track of your spending — and how hard it is to climb back out once you're in it.

2

What I needed wasn't advice — it was overview

There were plenty of people telling me what to do. What was missing: a simple place where I could see where my money was going, without feeling ashamed to share it. Most apps were built for people who already had it together. Not for me, at that moment.

3

That's why Okidoky is a ledger, not an advisor

You won't get unsolicited tips from us, no pushy notifications, no affiliate links to investment products. Just a calm overview of what's coming in and going out, so you can decide for yourself. Getting a grip is step one — everything else comes after, at your own pace.

4

Privacy is personal to me

If you've ever been under protective guardianship, you know what it feels like when everyone can peek at your spending. With Okidoky, your data stays yours: no ad tracking, no selling to third parties. That doesn't come from a privacy document — it comes from experience.

Our promise

We're building the app I wish I'd had back then — simple, honest, yours.

No claim that an app solves everything. Just the belief that overview is the start of grip — and grip is the start of everything after.

Our timeline

From idea to product

Okidoky didn't appear overnight. It's been built step by step over more than 2 years and keeps growing. These are the milestones.

  1. 2024

    The problem becomes concrete

No existing budget app did what we were looking for: track together with your partner, scan receipts without fuss, and genuinely private. We decided to build it ourselves.

  2. 2024

    First working version

A first working version with the basics: transactions, categories and receipts. Just for personal use at first.

  3. 2025

    Public launch

Okidoky.nl opened up with a free tier, Premium subscription and Lifetime option. No marketing launch — just live, and shared with people who asked for it.

  4. 2025

    Shared ledgers

Sharing one ledger became possible. Couples and families could keep track together for the first time, each with their own account and their own rights.

  5. 2026

    Multilingual and easier to find

English and Chinese translations plus explainer pages for different people, features and comparisons. You're reading one now.

  6. 2026

    Security and explanation

Separate pages about security and how we work. We explain what we do, how we make money and what we don't do.

Our principles

5 principles we won't let go

Under each point you'll find what it means in practice.

  • Privacy first, the rest after

With every new feature we pick the option that touches your privacy the least. Sometimes a little less flashy, but safer.

On free accounts your receipt is read on your own device, not at our end. Premium has a smarter scan that does go over the internet. See /bonnetjes-scannen.

  • No investors pulling at us

We have no investors who want a lot of money back quickly. That lets us do what users want, instead of growing as fast as possible.

The €25 Lifetime earns us less in the long run than a subscription — but we'd rather reward the people who are here early.

  • Open about what we DON'T do

No "we're working on it"-promises for features that won't come. If something doesn't fit Okidoky, we just say so.

We name competitors (YNAB) and acknowledge when they fit better.

  • Actively developed, not hibernating

An update every month, with an explanation of what changes. No silent changes, no surprises.

See /roadmap for what's being built now and what comes after.

  • Your data stays in Europe

Everything we keep is on servers in Europe and falls under European privacy law. Nothing goes to American clouds.

Our servers sit in secure European data centers.

How do we make money?

Where our income comes from

It's good to know how an app makes its money. Here's how we keep the lights on.

In one line

Most of it comes from Premium and Lifetime. The rest from a few quiet ads for free users. We don't sell data and we have no investors.

Our income sources, from largest to smallest

  • 1

    Premium subscriptions (monthly)

    largest source

Recurring monthly payments (€1.50/mo) from users who want extra features: sharing, bank import, detailed reports.

  • 2

    Lifetime licences (one-off)

    mid-sized

One-off payments (€25 personal, €49.95 Family) for users who prefer to avoid subscriptions. Deliberately offered to reward trust.

  • 3

    Quiet ads (free version)

    smallest

One small ad per screen for free users. We don't track you. Advertisers pay for the space, not for your data.

Okidoky is still a young product, so we don't give exact percentages — they'd be more guessed than true right now. What is true: the subscriptions bring in by far the most, ads are an add-on for the free version.

What we do NOT do

Promises we can't break

What we don't do is sometimes more important than what we do. These are things we'll never do, even if they make money.

  • We don't sell data

Not to advertisers, not to companies that resell data, to nobody. Your transactions and receipts stay with us or get deleted.

  • No affiliate spam

No "buy this mortgage through us and we earn €500"-links in the app. No partner deals that compromise your privacy.

  • No hidden tricks

Cancelling is as easy as signing up. No hidden cancel buttons, no endless "are you sure?"-screens, no subscription that suddenly costs 3x as much.

  • No crypto or speculation

We don't integrate meme-coins, trading affiliates, or "invest now!"-banners. Your budget app shouldn't be a gambling app.

  • No marketing spam by email

Only emails that really matter (password reset, important notifications) and the newsletter if you ticked it yourself. Never "2 hours left for a discount!"-mails.

  • We don't track you and we sell nothing

The ads free users see come mostly from advertisers we approve ourselves, without tracking you. If there's no ad for a moment, Google fills the space — only if you've accepted cookies, and without us following you across websites or selling your data. Premium and Lifetime see no ads at all. Want the details? See /sub-verwerkers.

Our promise to you

What you can expect from us

  • We respond personally to every serious question
  • We fix security problems within 48 hours
  • We warn you at least 6 months ahead for service changes
  • You can always download your data
  • We don't give "later"-answers to simple questions
  • We'd rather listen to feedback than to nice-looking numbers

Question, feedback or criticism?

We read every message personally. Including rants (though we don't particularly enjoy them). If you feel we're violating a principle, we want to hear about it.

You get a personal reply — no standard form letters, no chatbot.
